WSOP Bracelet Winner Profile: Jake Cody
- Jessica Welman | June 4, 2011
Most 21 year-old poker pros are chomping at the bit to get to Las Vegas and get in on the World Series of Poker action, but Jake Cody almost missed out completely on his rookie season at the WSOP because of Bambi.
Cody planned to take part in a couple of weeks’ worth of events at the 2010 WSOP last year, but a run-in on the way to the airport caused the somewhat nervous flyer to change his mind.
“A deer ran straight into the taxi,” Cody explains matter of factly. “Everyone was okay, but I thought it was a sign that I shouldn’t go.”
Cody worked up the courage to cross the pond and play in the Main Event last year, but after a relatively uneventful run, his rookie WSOP season drew to a close.
Now Cody is one for two in WSOP events, having won the $25,000 Heads-Up Championship Friday night, defeating Yevgeniy Timoshenko heads-up to pick up the bracelet as well as more than $830,000. Flanked by what had to be 50 boisterous Brits chanting and singing in support, Cody also made history as poker’s youngest Triple Crown winner.
For Cody, the WSOP win was a memorable one, not only because of the impressive accomplishment, but also because his large group of friends were there to support him. When asked why this bracelet win meant more to him than his other major victories, he didn’t dwell on the money, the prestige, or the record books. For him, “having the guys all here,” was the key factor to one of the most memorable nights of his life.

Yevgeniy Timoshenko on how Cody played in their heads-up match: The way Jake played, which you can’t blame him [for], is that he played really aggressively and didn’t want to see a lot of flops. He played a lot more preflop poker and I was kind of…I don’t want to say frustrated by, but I wanted to see more flops.”
Memorable quote: (on his strategy Day 4) “Against Timoshenko and Gus [Hansen], I didn’t have a strategy. I just decided to play by feel, really, because I wasn’t really sure how I was going to approach it.”
