WSOP: Event #7 ($1,500 No Limit Hold’em) Down to Nitty Gritty

Day 2 of Event #7 ($1,500 No Limit Hold ‘em) saw 337 players return for Day 2 and the bubble broke when three players busted on the last hand of hand-to-hand play. The  last two players to bust agreed to split the $2,742 awarded for 297th place.

It was another good day for Day 1 chip leader Gary Tang. Tang managed to keep his stack ahead of everyone elses for the better part of the day. Late in the day Tang was able to take down a big pot when he led out for 70,000 on a flop of Q 2 6, his opponent pushed all-in for 200,000 and Tang immediatley called. Tang showed A A and his opponent turned over K J, the turn gave up [10h] and it looked as though Tang’s pocket Aces would not hold up against his opponents flush and straight draws. But the 2 on the river was on Tang’s side and left his opponent high and dry. After the play the opponent said he thought Tang was bluffing and would fold to the re-raise.

Sandra Naujoks from Germany was the last woman standing of the night. She doubled up shortly after the dinner break when her A [10h] beat her opponents K [10d] after a board that read 6 6 7 Q 3. Naujoks Won the EPT Dortmund in March, making her the second female player to win an EPT Title and was looking to win her first WSOP bracelet. Unfortunatley this bracelet was not meant for a lady’s wrist. Naujoks was eliminated shortly before 1 a.m. On the bright side she walked away with $7,390.

After sitting near the top of the leaderboard for most of the day Alex Jacob was eliminated when he raised to 5,000 from under the gun with K K. Mark Salinaro re-raised in late-position and Jacob pushed all-in with 40,000, Salinaro called and showed A A. The flop came K 2 9 and it appeared that Jacob had Salinaro beat. The turn showed 3 and it looked as though Jacob had the pot won, but on the river Salinaro picked up A and Jacob’s day was over.

Sorel Mizzi was sent to the rail late in the day when his bluff failed him. Mizzi pushed all-in with his remaining 22,000 holding K 3 after a flop that read 6 8 9, Qui Nguyen called and showed 9 5, the turn read 6 and the river landed 7. Mizzi was out and Nguyen’s stack grew to 240,000.

Two leaders from Day 1, Clark Hamagami and Minneapolis Jim Meehan lost their shot at the bracelet as did Asian Poker Tour star Quinn Do.

Brandon Cantu and Jacobo Fernandez busted in 98th and 96th respectively and walked away with $4,038 each.
