WSOP: John Duthie vs. Leo Wolpert for Heads-Up World Championship

The newest World Champion is going to have to wait another day to get his crown - whoever he is. After seven rounds of play in the $10,000 Heads-Up World Championship event spread over three days at the World Series of Poker tournament officials decided to wait one more day.

The final two players, John Duthie and Leo Wolpert, will return to the Amazon Room at the Rio for a Noon match-up (broadcast live on ESPN360) in a best two-out-of-three scenario. The delay was necessary after both the quarterfinal and semi-final matches lasted longer than anticipated.

Duthie, the creator of the European Poker Tour, advanced to the finals by beating Steve O’Dwyer in the quarter-final and Nathan Doudney in the semi-final Monday evening. Wolpert had his hands full all day but still managed wins again Dustin “Neverwin” Woolf and Jamin Stokes to get his 50/50 shot at the bracelet come Tuesday.

The big story of the day on Monday was undoubtedly Johnny Chan. In position for a crack at bracelet #11, Chan took a commanding chip lead against Jamin Stokes in his quarterfinal match only to see that lead disappear in the longest match of the round. Stokes eventually reversed the lead and took out Chan to cut the pursuit of the all-time record for bracelets short.

For Duthie this is his tenth WSOP cash and only his second final table while Wolpert has seven WSOP cashes including a 3rd place finish in the $5,000 No Limit Hold’em Shootout last summer.

Also eliminated during quarterfinal play was Bryan Pellegrino who wasn’t able to get past eliminated by Doudney. The four players who were eliminated during quarter-final play (Woolf, Chan, O’Dwyer and Pellegrino) each earned $92,580. First place pays $625,682 and the bracelet while the runner-up will leave with $386,636.
