WSOP: Johnny Chan in Elite Eight of Heads-Up World Championship

With all the talk of Phil Ivey capturing his sixth and seventh bracelets and Erik Seidel’s 40th final table and missed chance for a ninth bracelet the forgotten man at the 2009 World Series of Poker has been Johnny Chan. The 10-time bracelet winner changed all of that Sunday as the Orient Express steamrolled through the field of the $10,000 Heads-Up World Championship.

Chan, and seven others will return to the Amazon Room at 2 pm on Monday to play down to a World Champion. Joining Chan in the Elite Eight are Bryan Pelligrino, Dustin Woolf, Nathan Doudney, Jamin Stokes, John Duthie, Steve O’Dwyer and Leo Wolpert.

While Chan is the biggest remaining name there were a number of notables who didn’t make it through the second day of play. Jeff Madsen, Tom Dwan, Vanessa Rousso, Chris Ferguson and Erik Seidel all saw their run at the title end on Sunday afternoon.

Each player is guaranteed $92,580 for reaching this far. A win in the next round would mean an additional $121,709 no matter what. The winner will walk away with $625,682 and the coveted gold bracelet. Runner-up receives $386,636.
