WSOP: Juanda Denies Hellmuth 12th WSOP Bracelet in $10,000 2-7 Championship
- Lance Bradley | June 12, 2011
Juanda beat a final table that included six other WSOP bracelet holders including Hellmuth, his final victim on the night. The win puts $367,170 into Juanda’s pockets while Hellmuth walked away with $226,907 as a consolation prize.
“Hellmuth actually played pretty good. I was very impressed with the way he played. He made one really great play against Joe Cassidy where he made Joe throw away the winning, break the winning hand, then Joe missed then he became the chipleader after that hand,” said Juanda. “Tonight he played really well and if the cards had fallen his way he could have been standing here doing the interview.”
Juanda actually finished fourth in this event in 2010 and 2009. Getting the win Saturday takes a little bit of pressure off.
“Maybe I run pretty good in this game, but it feels pretty good,” said Juanda. “You don’t want to be the guy who become known as the guy who always gets to the final table but never win you know?”
The day started with nine players on two tables. Greg Raymer busted out in ninth spot and was soon followed by Joe Cassidy in eighth. The elimination of Cassidy meant that this would mark the first time at the 2011 WSOP the winner was not taking home their first bracelet. The seven-handed final table began with Hellmuth as the chipleader and Ashby and Juanda right behind him.
Hasan Habib began final table play as the shortstack and accordingly exited in seventh place collecting $40,020.Habib was sent to the rail by Ashby after Ashby stood pat with a 10-9 and Habib was drawing to an 8-6 but paired his 2 on the draw. The hand pushed Ashby to the chiplead while Hellmuth slipped to second.
Hellmuth moved back on top after he and Ashby clashed in a sizable pot. Nick Schulman opened for 50,000, Hellmuth and Ashby both called. Ashby drew two and Schulman and Hellmuth each drew one card. Ashby and Schulman both checked before Hellmuth bet 140,000. Ashby called and Schulman folded before Hellmuth turned over an 8-7 and took the pot.
After being crippled by Steve Sung, the defending champion David Baker saw his run at a repeat end with a sixth place finish and a $51,485 cash. Hellmuth was hovering near the 1,500,000 chip mark before a pivotal hand with Ashby came up. From under-the-gun Hellmuth bet 55,000 only to see Ashby raise to 160,000 from the button. Hellmuth four-bet to 400,000 and Ashby called. Each player drew one card. Hellmuth lead out for 550,000 and after tanking for nearly four minutes Ashby folded.
Schulman, who won this event in 2009, also saw his tournament end at the hands of Hellmuth. Schulman opened for 60,000, Hellmuth raised to 340,000 and Schulman called all-in. Hellmuth stood pat with a jack and Schulman drew one but paired his eight to bust. That pot pushed Hellmuth past the 2,000,000 chip mark and gave him nearly 62% of the chips in play.
Juanda then took care of Sung. Juanda bet 52,000 from the button, Sung moved all-in for 260,000 from the small blind and Juanda called. Sung stood pat with J-9 and Juanda drew a five to his 10-6 to eliminate Sung in fourth spot.
Just before the players went on dinner break Hellmuth and Juanda danced in a 500,000 pot. Hellmuth bet 50,000 from the small blind and Juanda called from the big. Hellmuth drew two and checked while Juanda drew one and bet 200,000. Hellmuth thought for a couple of minutes before making the call and tabling a king. Juanda turned over a pair of fours and Hellmuth grabbed the pot. As players left for dinner Hellmuth had 2,600,000 of the 3,400,000 chips in play.
It didn’t take long for Hellmuth to go back to work. After Ashby lost 2/3 of his stack to Juanda, he moved all-in from the big blind for 200,000. Hellmuth called. Ashby drew one and Hellmuth tanked before asking for one and discarding a queen. Ashby tabled Q-10 and Hellmuth was drawing to an 8-6. Hellmuth caught a 10 to send Ashby out in third for his second cash of the Series.
Heads-up play began with Hellmuth holding a chip lead over Juanda but over the course of three hours of heads-up play Juanda slowly fought back before putting Hellmuth out of his misery just after midnight PT. Hellmuth moved all-in from the button for 550,000 and Juanda called. Phil stood pat with Q-T-8-5-2 and Juanda drew one card to J-8. He caught a 5 and denied Hellmuth his first non-Hold’em bracelet.
