WSOP: Mark Klecan Holds Lead Over Superstar Field in Event 33
- Brett Abel | June 16, 2009

The big guns names out once again for the sixth $10,000 World Championship tournament of the 2009 World Series of Poker.
It is Mark Klecan, however, who holds the chip lead with 115,000 at the end of Day 1 of Event 33, which will crown the best Limit Hold’em player in the world.
He finished ahead of a 185-player field that was worked down to 116 after eight levels of play through Day 1. Play resumes Tuesday at 2 p.m. Follow it live here.
Right behind him with 112,100 is 2004 Main Event third-place finisher Josh Arieh, who held one of the largest stacks in the Brasilia Room of the Rio Hotel Monday night and until play ended around 3 a.m. Tuesday morning.
“When I hold chips like that I try to play tighter than usual,” Arieh said. “They already think I’m crazy and don’t think I got (anything).”
Shaun Deeb and Mark Teltscher finished third and fourth in the chip count with 106,000 and 100,000, respectively, at the end of the day and were the only others with at least 100,000 with the average at 47,845.
Daniel Negreanu and Jeff Lisandro, who are separated by five-points in Player of the Year points and engaged in a two-man team prop bet for which pair can finish with the most points, were eliminated Monday night. They’re teammates, however, Erick Lindgren, Negreanu’s partner, and Barry Greenstein, Lisandro’s, remain in the field.
Doyle Brunson and his son Todd are will continue to play alongside Jennifer Harman, Lex Veldhuis and David Benyamine among others.
Andy Bloch, Phil Ivey and Phil Hellmuth, however, joined Negreanu and Lisandro on the rail after taking early exits.
