WSOP: Sean Getzwiller Beats Huge Field in $1,000 Event
- Michael Reed | June 9, 2011
It took him a little longer than most bracelet winners and he had a lot of people to get through along the way, but Sean Getzwiller can now say he won a WSOP event.
Getzwiller defeated the largest field of this 2011 World Series of Poker, besting4,177 players over the course of five days en route to victory in the $1,000 No Limit Hold’em event.
“I feel amazing. I won a bracelet in a 4,000 plus man event”, replied Getzwiller when asked how he feels. “How much better can I feel? I ran really well. Im just happy that I am here.”
Odette Tremblay started the final table as one of the short stacks. Her chances at becoming the first female to win an open event bracelet since Vanessa Selbts ended when her K
7
failed to hold against Sadan Turker‘s J
5
. Daniel Haglund followed Tremblay to the payout room after his A
J
fell to Max Weinberg’s A
4
when Weinberg paired his four on the river.
Hunter Frey exited in seventh place when his A
T
got outdrawn by Jon Turner‘s K
J
on a K
3
8
flop. The 6
on the turn delivered Frey some outs, but the 4
on the river ended his chance.
Shortly after Frey’s departure, play came to a halt when Turner noticed a mark in the 4
. New decks were brought into play but the problem persisted. The players moved to one of the outer tables after tournament officials discovered the feature table lighting made it easy to see the marks. Play resumed on the new table after the players were unable to pick out the problem card under different lighting.
Lawrence Riley moved his final 600,000 in holding A
K
shortly after the delay and was called by Turner, who held pocket jacks. When no ace or king appeared, Riley exited in sixth place.
The cards started to fall for the short stacks who managed to double numerous times, mostly at the expense of Turner. Stefan Raffay had a good chance at getting a double when he got all his chips in with pocket queens against the pocket nines of Turker. The 9
9
8
flop delivered quads for Turker leaving Raffay looking for running queens to stay in the tourney. His bracelet shot ended when the J
fell on the turn, eliminating him in fifth place.
Turker eliminated his third player of the final table a few hands later. This time it was Weinberg, who held K
Q
against Turker’s A
8
. An A
T
5
flop delivered Turker a pair of aces and when Weinberg failed to improve, he exited in fourth place.
The new hard stop rule meant that the final three players had to return on Wednesday to play to a winner. Turker held just under a 2-1 chip lead over Sean Getzwiller and Turner combined when play resumed. Getzwiller managed to get a quick double holding pocket aces against Turker’s pocket deuces. Turner was not so lucky when he was dealt pocket eights in the big blind facing an all-in shove from Turker. Turner called and found himself up against the Q
4
of Turker. The A
J
2
flop was kind to Turner but when the Q
came on the turn, his chances of winning a bracelet went on life support. When one of the remaining eights did not appear on the river, Turner became the first elimination of the day, leaving Getzwiller and Turker to battle for the bracelet and $611,185 first place money.
When heads-up play began, the players were within 135,000 of each other with 12,535,000 chips in play. The heads-up match had many twist and turns as each player had a 3-1 chip lead over their opponent numerous times. Being the short stack seemed to bring the advantage when an all-in occurred, as on ten occasions the shorty doubled to prolong the match.
Getzwiller eventually put an end to the madness when he got all in with pocket fives against Turker’s A
9
. The J
5
4
flop delivered Getzwiller a set, his first bracelet, and $611,185.
