WSOP: Smoke Has Cleared For Day 2 in the Shootout

Jason Somerville views his cards in the $1,500 No Limit Hold 'em Shootout (Event 22)

Ten players outgunned a field of 100 during  Day 2 of the $1,500 No Limit Hold ‘em Shootout (Event 22) and earned  a shot at a World Series of Poker bracelet.

Jason Somerville, Jeffrey Carris, Joshua Tieman, Ralph “Mike” Shannon, Joseph Cutler, Brandon Wong, Christopher Moore, Eugene Katchalov, Andrew Margolis and Michael McNeil shotdown some of the biggest guns in poker during two days of play to secure their place at a final table. The 1,000 player tournament began Wednesday with an array of pros that included Phil Ivey, Erick Lindgren, Andy Bloch, Mike Sexton and Michael Mizrachi, to name a few.

Day 2 saw the return of a handful of pros including Somerville, who was the only one able to survive his table and advance to Day 3.  Nick Binger, Theo Tran, Clark Hamagami, John Racener and Barry Shulman won their tables during Day 1 but found themselves on the losing end of the stacks before the day was over.

Shannon advanced to the final table after playing heads up for two and a half hours against Binger. Shannon moved all his chips into the middle after seeing a flop of 2 6 7. Binger made the call, Shannon showed 9 7 and Binger laid down 4 6. The board ran out J 3, advancing Shannon with a mere pair of sevens and ending Binger’s bid for his first WSOP bracelet.

Somerville secured his spot at the final table when he and Chris Klodnicki got all-in on a flop of 6 [10h] 8. Somerville felted K 8 holding middle pair and the nut flush draw. Klodnicki showed 9 7 holding the nut straight and a flush draw as well. The river showed the 2 putting Somerville in the lead. The 4 on the river failed to give Klodnicki the out he needed and he was sent packing.

Carris won his way to the final table after knocking out Dutch Boyd and then quickley eliminating one more not long after. After taking down two opponents so quicky another player at his table remarked on his expanding stack by saying “The mountain of chips groweth.”

McNeil rounded out the final table when, after 11 hours of play, he beat out Arkadiy Tsinis. Tsinis pushed all-in pre-flop holding K 8 and McNeil quickley made the call holding A Q. The board ran out 4 7 4 [Ja] 6, giving McNeil a chance at the bracelet holding only Ace high.

The ten players will return Friday to take home a piece of the $1, 365,000 prize pool. The winner will take home $313, 673 and a WSOP gold bracelet. A nice return on a $1,500 investment.
