WSOP: Top Pros Fall in $1,500 No Limit Hold’em Shootout
- Paul Oresteen | June 11, 2009
The World Series of Poker $1,500 No Limit Hold’em Shootout (Event 22) wound down to the end of play just past 8 p.m PST. Shootout format tournaments are the events that poker journalists love to hate: they usually make for short days, no chip counts to report, and players are easy to track because tables aren’t broken down.
Exactly 1,000 players started at noon spread across the Amazon and Brasilia rooms on 100 tables. Thursday 100 players will return to ten tables to play down to only one final table.
All returning players for Day 2 have made the money and will have 45,000 in chips. Notables that have moved on are: Theo Tran, Victor Ramdin, Nick Binger, Matt “All In at 420″ Stout, and Jonathan Jaffe. Finding themselves free to play other events were Phil Ivey, Erick Lindgren, Shannon Elizabeth, and Peter Eastgate. The elimination of top pros was the theme of early play, others that busted early were: Jean-Robert Bellande, David “Devilfish” Ulliot, Lee Watkinson, J.C. Tran, Isaac Haxton, and Evelyn Ng.
Most tables broke relatively early, the field seemed to favor aggressive online Sit & Go strategy, but Paul Keesey played heads-up for nearly four hours before he won his table. Chan “Peter” Ping was the last player to beat his table and advance.
Derric Haynie had 95% of the chips in play at his table and easily called his oppenent’s dark all-in bet. His J

was dominated by Q

sealed the victory for Haynie.
Taking advantage of a large number of pros leaving the field accomplished players with tons of online experience look to cut up the field even more. The most well known online player making the crossover to live results has to be Stout. Dutch Boyd, Tran, and Jaffe also have strong online histories.
Play resumes Thursday at 2 p.m. and they will play down to a final table. Each returning player is already guarenteed a payout of $5,236. Tomorrow’s single table action is predicted to be much tighter with winners taking longer to win their table.
